Back in Sept of 2022, the City of Eagle Mountain lost $1.13 Million dollars to an unknown hacker. We are now coming up on the 6-month mark since the unidentified thief took the $1.13 million from the City. The question stands, has the city been able to recoup the $1.13 Million?
On the rumor stop page on the City Website the following question was asked: Has the City recovered the $1.13 million that was lost to fraud? Did the insurance pay the whole amount? The cities response to that question was: “Eagle Mountain City is working with both the FBI and the insurance company to resolve this matter, but at this point no reimbursements have been made. The City will send out an update to residents as soon as one is available.”
I sent an Email to Tyler Maffitt the Eagle Mountain Communications Manager to see if there was an update. The official response from Maffitt and the city was, “At this time, the F.B.I. continues to investigate this matter. Eagle Mountain City is consistently following-up while both investigators and the City’s insurance provider sort this out. We will update residents as soon as more information is available.”
“The Anonymous Hacker Who Stole from Eagle Mountain” By: Alexis P. Rhyme |
The city of Eagle Mountain was sound asleep, Until a hacker found a way in deep, And stole away one million one hundred thirty three, To the city treasury this was a heavy fee. The hacker took the money and he ran, The city’s coffers were now bare, No one could imagine such a criminal plan, Leaving the city feeling scared. The hacker made away with his stolen prize, Leaving Eagle Mountain to pay the price, For the one million one hundred thirty three, That was taken away from the city treasury. A hacker did a deed so bad, From Eagle Mountain, 1.13 million was had. The city was left in a state of shock, To think of all the damage this hacker had done to the block. The insurance company was slow to react, It’s been weeks and the city’s funds are still attacked. The mayor, he cries, for no relief in sight, The citizens worry for their future’s plight. The hacker remains anonymous, The city and its citizens, helpless and hopeless. We’ve all been wronged, no one can deny, And the question remains, ‘How long till the money is supplied?’ |

As a follow-up, I did a GRAMA request to the city on February 9th, 2023 for, “Copy of the most recent contract with Eagle Mountain City and Utah Local Government Trust. A copy of any insurance policy documents with the Trust. A copy of the insurance claim that was submitted for coverage of the 1.13 million incident.” Here are the documents and response from Finn, the City Recorder. “The attached Cyber Insurance Summary and Eagle Mountain Government Crime and Fidelity Coverage Summary are provided in response to your request dated February 9, 2023. Regarding the request for “A copy of the insurance claim that was submitted for coverage of the 1.13 million incident.” Eagle Mountain doesn’t have anything responsive to this portion of the request, as the matter was handled over the phone.”
To be fair, Cyber Crime has increased over the years, and the number one type of breach this would fall under.
