Hi! My name is Charlotte Ducos, and I am running for Eagle Mountain City Council. I have been a resident of Eagle Mountain since September 2000 and have been involved in City Politics throughout my time here. I have volunteered with the City to organize Meet the Candidate events since 2003 and have volunteered in many capacities in the community including PTA, School related activities, School District advocacy, etc. I actually attended my first City Council meeting before we moved here due to an issue that impacted our property. I am a staunch advocate of informed civic engagement. I am a wife and a mother of 5 (amazing) children.
Currently I am employed as a teacher at Cedar Valley High School. I teach AP Government and Politics, AP Comparative Government and Politics, CE Political Science 1100, Current Issues, and am a Student Council Advisor. In August I finish up the last two classes and qualifying examination for my Masters in American History and Government at Ashland University through the Congressional James Madison Fellowship.
I am running for City Council first, because I was once again asked to (rather, told to) by a friend, and it finally felt like the right time. Second, Eagle Mountain is at a critical juncture right now. Our population is still growing quickly and we are in the midst of expansions to our sewer system, our water system, our transportation infrastructure, as well as other growth-related needs, and we are seeing significant growth economically as well. Third, we are in the middle of a City initiated School District split. How we interact with a newly forming District will be crucial. I believe my experience and expertise will be helpful in meeting the needs and making the vital decisions that are before the Council and I look forward to serving the citizens of Eagle Mountain.
Issues that are important to me are:
1. Transportation–continuing and magnifying the efforts the City is making to add alternative route(s) in and out of the City and mitigating the growing pains that come with construction.
2. Affordable Housing–making sure as we meet State statute regarding this issue that we are providing opportunities and methods of developing housing that are actually affordable, not just housing that we call affordable because it is smaller in size or more dense.
3. Education–while Education is usually more District-centered, the upcoming split for Alpine School District was City-initiated, and therefore the City takes a more active role in that process. I want to make sure that from the City perspective we are doing all we can to ensure that the organization of the District that will serve Eagle Mountain’s students is created in a way that is optimal for students, teachers, and staff; and that we are catching up with, as well as planning appropriately for future growth.
Clearly there are additional issues facing the City. If you have questions regarding other issues, feel free to check out my website or contact me directly at ducosforcitycouncil@gmail.com.(All content and policy positions shared publicly and on my website are my own and do not represent Alpine School District or Cedar Valley High School.)
