On Thursday September 20th, the mascot and logo were unveiled for the Cedar Valley High School that is currently under construction along Pony Express in what is called the City Center section of Eagle Mountain.
The mascot that was selected for the High School is an American Kestrel. The smallest, yet most tenacious member of the falcon family.
Tom Westmoreland, the mayor of Eagle Mountain made this statement about the selection of Cedar Valley High School mascot, “Though the kestrel falcon is a beautiful and interesting bird, it is not more majestic or more powerful than the eagle, which might seem a more logical choice. However, adopting the kestrel as a symbol of inspiration is not a testament to power or majesty, it is a testament to dedication, service, and the grit to stand alone if necessary to make the world a better place.”
It is not an uncommon sight to see kestrels flying in the skies over Eagle Mountain. In fact Eagle Mountain is home to the Eagle Mountain Kestrel project. During the 2018 nesting season the project banded 73 nestlings in Eagle Mountain (39 male and 34 female) from 18 boxes (average 4 nestlings per box). The project currently monitors 25 boxes in and around Eagle Mountain. Those nest boxes are located on private property (16) and property owned by Eagle Mountain (9). The project also has maintained a web cam in one of the nesting boxes for the last few years. The project is helping Hawk Watch International collect data as well. The hope is to add several new boxes and change the location of a couple of them for the up comming nesting season.
Shon Reed, the main founder of the Eagle Mountain Kestrel Project and resident of Eagle Mountain, estimated that the volunteers on the project spend over 250 hours this year. “I’d estimate we put in ~250 hours among the various volunteers in checking sites, maintaining and installing boxes and misc other related tasks this year.” The project has been very successful in Eagle Mountain over the last few years. It is hoped, with the High School mascot being a Kestrel, that involvement in the project will increase in future years. Mayor Westomoreland has been a supporter of the Eagle Mountain Kestrel Project, he had this to say about the project and Shon Reed, “When I see the kestrel I will remember that everyone of us can make a difference, we can make life better, and in those times that we feel small and powerless, may we discover the heart of a kestrel falcon and their caretaker, Shon Reed.”
Not only was the mascot unveiled at the event, but the logo was also made public.
