Town-wide water Fight July 23rd
This water fight of epic proportions dates back to the early 1940s. What started as a group of boys filling up buckets from nearby ditches to drench unsuspecting girls having a lumber party the night of July 23rd, continued the following year with the girls drenching the boys. After that, it became a tradition and has evolved to include water guns, balloons, hoses, and other creative water dispensing devices. people in trucks, side by side, and also law enforcement have gotten involved in the fun. The rule of thumb is, do not come to Cedar Fort on the 23rd unless you plan on getting wet.
Story from Vicki Draper
My mom Joan Berry was born in 1932. When she was a teenager, the teenage girls slept outside at one of their houses on the 23rd of July. The boys in town found them and threw buckets of water on them. The next year the girls found where the boys were sleeping and threw water on them. One year the girls slept in the big Hacking’s bar on top of the haystack thinking the boys would never find them there. But they did. As Mama was trying to get away from the boys, one of her brand-new shoes fell down between the bales of hay. She had to wait until all the hay was gone to get her shoe. By then her shoe was too small to wear. her mother was so mad at her because they didn’t have money to buy her shoes for school.
