The year 2020 has been a rough ride for the graduates of 2020. This year they are split between two high schools. The older Westlake High School (home of the Thunder) and the new Cedar Valley High School (home of The Aviators). Usually, the graduates would fill a huge auditorium on the BYU campus. But this year they will be having one on one times where they receive their diplomas and take pictures with a small group of family members. The graduates spent the last months of their final High School year in isolation at home with their families because of COVID-19. As a parent of one of these graduates (Go Thunder), I can tell you that it has been hard. There have been a lot of tears and a lot of sorrow caused by pandemic isolation. The graduating class of 2020 still has what it takes.
Julie King is a member of the Alpine School District Board of Education that covers the Eagle Mountain area. When asked about the graduating class of 2020, she made this statement.
Our graduates faced a senior year that was abbreviated. They faced the loss of spring sports, prom, and graduation that looked entirely different from what they anticipated. They missed out on some of those rites of passage. But they handled all of it with a maturity beyond their years. I am constantly impressed by our students and their resiliency and ability to do hard things. Those attributes will serve them well throughout their lives. They embody our district motto to “shine.” I know our students will go out and change the world. I can’t wait to see what they do!

2020 will be a year in the history books, and these graduates will have stories to tell for generations to come. Great job graduates of 2020, and keep up the good work. During this time, there is usually a lot of praise given to the top 10%, and the top of the graduating classes. Let’s also take some time to congratulate those who are not in the top 10%. A lot of them also had struggled during the year and worked hard to get their diplomas..
