“With libraries being accessible electronically, one might expect the Eagle Mountain Library to fall out of favor. Such has not been the case. The Eagle Mountain Library has expanded and is booming with activity. Michelle Graves and her team have been issuing more library cards than ever before. Hard copy books are big part of what our library offers but it does so much more. Over the summer, the library hosted a successful lunch program. You can even check out pickle ball equipment to use at Cory Wride Park. Come visit the library, talk to Michelle, and Discover everything your library has to offer.” – Mayor Westmoreland Eagle Mountain City
Michele Graves the Library Director continues, “I have worked here for over 21 years now and there have been some great things that have happened. We have had 2 former staff members receive their Citizenship while working here and we closed the library both times to attend their ceremonies in Salt Lake which was a really great thing to witness. We have 2 residents who learned English here- one checked out items we received and studied hard at home, the other volunteered here with very little English and left 6-months later fluent! Recently I overheard an adult who had come into the library with his wife and applied for a library card mention that he had not had a card since he was 8 years old! I found that funny and he has been using his card ever since.”
“I love working here- I love finding what people are coming in for- I love getting people outside of their comfort zone by recommending things they may never pick up. I absolutely love to see a kid or adult who “hates to read”, come back in to ask for another recommendation because they loved the item you offered them the last time they came in. Connecting people with knowledge or even just connecting them with an “escape” is my favorite thing by far working in a library.”
“My goal is to leave the library a place that continues to grow and flourish. I would like to see plans for a larger library become reality. I love that we have a diverse collection and hope that when I leave (in the future) that it continues to provide materials for all who need/want them. My favorite quote is: “A truly great library has something in it to offend everyone”. I believe that is the great power of a public library- ALL should feel welcome and be able to find something relevant to them.”
Kristin Allred the Assistant Library Director also enjoys working and helping others at the Eagle Mountain Library. “I love that libraries provide a welcoming environment for everyone in the community. We put a lot of effort into making sure our library has something for every person that walks through the doors. It is such a rewarding feeling when you help a patron accomplish what they came in to do/find.
Like a lot of jobs, a library has a list of never-ending goals and missions to accomplish. A more immediate goal for me is to make items in our online catalog easier to find/search for, and to help find ways for our library to expand our outreach programs.
A long-term goal (wish list, YEARS in the future) is to help grow our library into a larger building, staff, and collection of materials/resources.”
The library has a lot to offer, and you can get a FREE library card with little to no effort as a Cedar Valley resident. Michele and Kristin and the other Library Staff will be more than happy to help you with the large collection of physical and virtual resources that the FREE library card gives you access to.
The library is currently recruiting for 2 library board members. These terms would not begin until January. Please submit a short bio and note about why you would be a good fit for the library board to: mgraves@emcity.orgThe board will meet in November to select candidates to send to the Mayor for approval.
