This is the last of the series of questions that I asked. And I think it may be one of the most important. I have also included at the end of this the PDF copy of the emails that I received with the candidates’ answers. Please reach out to them, each of them. The PDF files also include information about their campaign manager if they have one, so you can also reach out to their campaign manager as well to get something set up in your neighborhood, or request yard signs. Ballots have been mailed out to residents already, so please look into each of the candidates and cast your vote as an informed resident.
Question: What can you do for Eagle Mountain that someone else cannot do or you were unable to do if you are running again?
Mayor Candidates
Melissa Clark
We have had some really great mayors that have each brought significant talent and skills to the job. Mayor Jackson was masterful at bringing attention to EM and advocating to get things like funding for road improvements and other needs. She worked to build community and was a steady hand after years of tumult. Mayor Pengra was a strong leader with a commanding sense of stewardship and responsibility. He was always accountable to the people and people knew how to access him. He built a sense of community through Cory Wride park and was intentional and resolute in the vision of economic development and building relationships with neighboring cities. Mayor Painter, while he only served a few months, brought experience and helped continue the progress that was made by previous Mayors, and also appointed individuals to help keep that vision and progress going. Mayor Westmoreland comes from a marketing background so he was willing to try new things like a podcast and additional social media presence. His laidback nature made difficult meetings more bearable and allowed for council to work through difficult decisions.
I will take all the good things I have learned from our previous mayors and add my leadership and problem solving skills that I have learned from years in the business world. Our company’s increased revenue and productivity speaks volumes about my ability to manage the operations and projects of several teams and interact effectively with marketing, manufacturing, sales, and logistics and along other divisions. I bring my ability to connect, inform, and relate with people that I learned from years as a teacher. While I am a strong leader and tenacious advocate, I have also learned to be a really good listener; people have come to know me for how much I love this city and the heart that pour into all that I do.
City Council Candidates
Tyler Shimakonis
We have a fabulous group of candidates. What I bring to the table is variety and depth of experience in the community. I have had the pleasure of serving on several boards through the city. I understand the local education landscape. I bring a variety of experience with several areas that allow me to understand the conversation and hit the ground running.
Brett Wright
I can see that rural development patterns and policies are interjected, contemplated and intertwined into the fabric of each land use decision. I will be an active, firm voice and lend my land use experience in advocating for these same principles as we review and update the general plan. I have helped to accomplish this by my assistance in writing the new residential zone code, MDA code, and other land use decisions while serving on the Planning Commission. I can and will see that exisitng vested rights are identified and used to help create the next updated general plan adn I will see that an updated accurate zoning map is created and updated with regular frequency. I can promise Eagle Mountain Citizens that if I’m given a chance to serve as a city council representative that actually makes policy decisions that theirs are the voices I will hear most clearly as these decisions are made.
Rich Wood
I plan to continue to remove the loop holes in our land development code. Re evaluate the layout of our general plan and correct some of the areas that are either in the wrong place or has too much of one type of land use. I will find solutions to move up timelines for necessary road creation, broader economic development types and enforce the code
Jason Allen
Through my education (MBA) and work experience (business strategy and planning), I can help the city apply best practices from business to city government (communication, planning, process improvement, keeping costs down). I will also help attract good businesses to the city by helping them understand the unique opportunity they would have to operate in our city.
Donna Burnham
I bring experience, an understanding of the planning process from start to finish, a knowledge of good budgeting principles and how to put them into action, and a love of Eagle Mountain. I just want to serve my community and be a part of our great future.
Maria Hopkin
My focus as a City Councilmember will be to put my unique perspective, energy and skills to work identifying and meeting the needs of our citizens. I have a powerful combination of experience, education, skill set, and record of taking action to creatively solve issues; connect people to the resources they need to thrive; and build community networks for increased quality of life. I know the key to collaboration and synergy is a healthy balance of the willingness to both listen and use my voice to speak up for those I have stewardship over.
