Cue the groans. Cue the countdown. Cue the denial. But whether we like it or not (and I do), it’s that time again—Back to School.
Now, before you start mourning the end of lazy mornings and popsicles at 10 a.m., hear me out: this is one of my favorite times of year! There’s something magical about the hum of fluorescent lights in the school supply aisle, the scent of freshly sharpened pencils (I know what I said), and the thrill of picking out a brand-new first-day outfit. And yes, I still buy myself one every year. I may not be the one riding the bus, but I’m definitely driving the carpool.
Let’s make this transition a little less bumpy and a lot more joyful. Here are some tips to help your family ease back into school life—with a smile, a schedule, and maybe a celebratory donut or two.
1. Re-establish Routines (Without the Drama)
Summer may be the season of “bedtime is more of a suggestion,” but August (and your future self) is begging for structure.
Adjust the Sleep Schedule
Ease into earlier bedtimes and wake-ups at least a week before school starts. Start by dialing it back 15 minutes a night. Cold turkey wake-ups result in grumpy kids… and even grumpier parents.
Create a Morning Routine
Practice the basics: get dressed (yes, pants are mandatory), eat breakfast, brush teeth, pack your bag, and locate both shoes—the first time.
Bedtime Rituals Matter
Wind down with a bath, storytime, or quiet reading. Ditch the late-night screens unless you enjoy negotiating with overtired zombies.
After-School Energy Burn-Off
Plan for movement after school—bike rides, backyard soccer, or just chasing the dog counts. It helps them sleep, and it helps you stay sane.
2. Get Organized (or Pretend Like You Are)
School Supplies Galore
Check your list, check it twice, and don’t forget the glue sticks. You always forget the glue sticks.
Design a Homework Zone
Pick a quiet, clutter-free space where kids can focus. Bonus points if it doesn’t face the fridge, the TV, or the sibling doing cartwheels.
Set Some Goals
Talk with your child about what they want to accomplish this year—maybe it’s better grades, making a new friend, or just remembering their lunchbox more than twice a week.
Plan Ahead Like a Pro
Use a calendar or planner to track assignments, activities, and spirit days (because no one wants to be the only kid not wearing mismatched socks on Wacky Wednesday).
3. Rekindle Friendships and Positivity
Reunite Before the Bell Rings
Arrange a few playdates or meet up at the park. Seeing a familiar face on day one can ease nerves and increase excitement.
Talk It Out
If your child is anxious, listen first, reassure second. Avoid “Don’t worry!” and instead try, “It’s normal to feel a little nervous. Let’s figure out what might help.”
Positive Vibes Only
Be the cheerleader they didn’t know they needed. “You’ve got this!” “This year is going to be amazing!” and my personal favorite, “Remember, everyone forgets their locker combo at least once.”
Ask for Help if Needed
There’s no shame in needing support—whether it’s emotional, academic, or organizational. Teachers, counselors, and yes, even grandparents, are here to help.
4. Build Healthy Habits (for All of You)
Eat Well-ish
Start the day with protein and a little fruit. A donut and a Red Bull don’t count. (I know, I’m no fun.)
Move It, Move It
Exercise helps with focus, sleep, and mood. Even just walking to and from school adds up.
Mindful Moments
Practice deep breathing or simple mindfulness activities, especially if your child feels overwhelmed. I recommend box breathing—plus it makes you feel like a Navy SEAL.
Take Breaks, Not Breakdowns
School is a marathon, not a sprint. Build in time for relaxing, laughing, and maybe even doing absolutely nothing. It’s okay.
Final Thoughts: You’re Doing Great
Parents, I see you. Transitioning back to school is no small feat. It’s messy, loud, occasionally sticky (how??), and always a little bittersweet. But it’s also full of possibility. A fresh notebook, a sharpened pencil, and a brand-new start.
Mistakes will happen. Lunches will be forgotten. Permission slips will get crumpled into backpack black holes. But you’ll get through it. And one day, you’ll look back and smile at how you all grew that year.
So, cheers to Back to School! May your routines be smooth, your mornings be calm-ish, and may you always find the glue sticks.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to break in a new pair of sandals before Back to School Night.
