Press Release
Rio L. Barney holds a bachelor’s degree in aviation science from Utah Valley University and was classically trained as a pilot. Despite her aviation background, she spent several years working as a firefighter and EMT, drawn to high-stakes, service-oriented careers. Eventually, she took on what she humorously refers to as the most dangerous job of all—raising children. In her downtime, she writes and tends a desert garden, aiming for a lush oasis despite water restrictions.
Rio L. Barney has an event at the American Fork Library on August 2, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM for her novel, A Flicker in the Dark. ‘A Flicker in Time’ introduces a world where the ringing in your ears might signal the presence of a demon. In this supernatural universe, elite warriors known as Slayers—members of the Divine Caste—battle these dark forces, unseen by most. The story follows Braconis and Rygel Bernhard, the two eldest brothers of a gifted family, as they discover their inherited powers and join the fight to protect Earth. Along the way, they encounter ancient warriors, malevolent entities, and the challenges of everyday life, including math class taught by their cursed great uncle. The novel blends humor, dark fantasy, and coming-of-age themes in a world where belief just might save your life.
