CEDAR VALLEY, UT – Looking for a unique and educational experience for your home school students? Camp Floyd State Park invites families to a special Home School Friday event on March 28, 2025, at 10:00 AM.
This month’s activity takes students back in time to discover the fascinating world of wool production. Participants will get hands-on experience with carding and spinning wool, just as early settlers did in the 19th century.
What is Carding and Spinning?
Before wool can be used to make clothing or fabric, it must go through a multi-step process:
Carding – This is the process of brushing raw wool fibers with special tools called carders. The goal is to untangle and align the fibers, making them soft, fluffy, and ready for spinning. In the past, this was a time-consuming but essential step in wool production.
Spinning – After carding, the wool is twisted into yarn using a spinning wheel or a simple hand spindle. This turns the loose fibers into strong, continuous threads that can be woven into fabric.
Students will get a chance to card and spin wool themselves, gaining a hands-on appreciation for the craftsmanship and effort that went into making textiles in the 19th century.
The event is open to home-school students of all ages. Admission is just $4 per person, and reservations are required. Don’t miss this chance to learn, explore, and experience history firsthand!
