New Wave of Avian Flu Spreads Across Utah, Impacts Great Salt Lake Wildlife

A renewed surge of highly pathogenic avian influenza is impacting wild birds across Utah, with an estimated 50,000 eared grebes and hundreds of other birds dying near the Great Salt Lake in recent months. Wildlife officials say the outbreak, ongoing since 2022, is spreading during migration season and are urging residents to report clusters of dead birds while avoiding contact.
